This CPD focusses on the critical elements of negotiating strategically in criminal matters, as well as doing so ethically. You will understand aspects of the decision making process and how to properly prepare for a negotiation, and importantly, how to negotiate effectively on behalf of your clients while helping the other party to gain.

1. Understanding the elements of negotiating in the criminal law space.
2. Understand the critical responsibility of doing so ethically.
3. Know how to fully prepare for negotiating on any matter in a criminal case.
4. Learn how to consider all aspects of the other party’s needs, including the need for fairness and justice.

Presenter: John B Lawrence SC, Barrister, James Muirhead Chambers 

John B Lawrence SC has practised mainly in criminal law in the NT and is a former President of the NTBA and CLANT. He was Senior Crown Prosecutor for 5 years, Solicitor-in-Charge of the then NAALAS for 5 years; and has been at the private Bar for 20 years, being appointed Senior Counsel in 2010. He has prosecuted and defended murder trials and many other serious crimes. John has appeared in the High Court of Australia and regularly in the NTCCA, as well as several Royal Commissions, including the latest into the Protection and Detention of Children in the NT. He has presented CPD lectures for many years to the NT and interstate professions, covering topics such as ethics, cross-examination of children as witnesses and appellate advocacy.
